David de Gea has been warned Manchester United could move him on if his performances don’t improve.
Spanish international De Gea has been holding out on a new deal at Manchester United , with his current contract due to expire next summer.
However, the goalkeeper has been warned he might not get the deal he wants with mistakes creeping into his game – such as when he was beaten at his near post by Patrick van Aanholt as Crystal Palace won 2-1 at Old Trafford last month.
And with De Gea having been under the microscope for several slip-ups over the last few months, United might decide to move him on if they think his demands have started to exceed his value.
De Gea has been linked with Juventus, who are said to be keen to snap up the 28-year-old next summer.
But he must up his game if he wants to secure either a move to a Champions League club or a bumper new deal, according to former Chelsea goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer .
Talking to Goal , Schwarzer said of United: “They will have to come to a decision at some point on whether his value is the same as what he is asking for.
“There’s speculation about him and then there’s the fact that he may still choose to leave.
“Ultimately there comes the point where your history and your past performances only get you so far. It is about now. If you look at his last six months, his average performances haven’t been anywhere near what they have been in the past.
“If you break it down, a lot of goals have come from direct mistakes from De Gea. Probably more than in the entire six or seven-year period before. There is always a balancing act as a player. What’s your current value? Your recent performances come into that.
“Can he get to the level he was at before? Part of that is being consistent. Consistency is not a word I would associate with David de Gea over the last six months. If not more.”

De Gea’s future is still unclear amid suggestions that Juventus are preparing to make the goalkeeper their latest big-name free transfer addition in 2020.
He was also linked with Paris-Saint Germain in the summer as well as Real Madrid , who had a bid for the keeper turned down in 2017.
United’s attempts to get De Gea – who has captained United on occasion this season – to sign a new deal have so far come to nothing, with the stopper believed to be uncertain about the club’s future under the stewardship of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, while he is also itching to play in the Champions League again.
De Gea was overlooked in favour of Chelsea’s Kepa Arrizabalaga for Spain’s 2-1 Euro 2020 qualifier victory over Romania last Thursday, although he was back for their 4-0 win against the Faroe Islands in Gijon on Sunday.
