William Saliba returns to Arsenal ahead of Gunners’ Watford clash

Arsenal’s summer signing William Saliba has been pictured training at the Gunners’ London Colney base as he recovers from knee surgery.

The 18-year-old joined the Gunners for £27million in the summer despite interest from north London rivals Tottenham Hotspur, although he then headed straight back to former club Saint-Etienne on loan for the season.

It was there that an old adductor muscle injury flared up in the middle of August, forcing Saliba to have surgery and face six weeks on the sidelines.

Now, in the final stages of his recovery, he’s been snapped working out in the Gunners’ gym along with fellow summer signing Kieran Tierney, who is now nearing full fitness after the international break.

Arsenal – who face Watford on Sunday – shared an image of Saliba on their official Instagram account along with the words “Look who it is!”, with fans left both delighted and a bit bemused to see the new arrival getting back to full fitness.

Plenty questioned just why the youngster had returned, and one supporter, ’emirfz_’ even joked: “Keep him here, don’t let him leave the training ground, give Saint-Etienne Mustafi.”

Saliba spoke about his delight at signing for the Gunners in the summer, claiming that they are the biggest club in England .

“I spoke to Matteo [Guendouzi],” he said.

“I even bumped into him at a funfair in Paris, and that’s where I told him that Arsenal wanted to sign me! He gently advised me to come here and explained what it was like.

“This is the biggest club in England for me, so it was an easy decision. I didn’t think twice about signing here, so I’m really happy.

I’ve been watching Arsenal play in the Champions League and so on, and there are a lot of French players who have come through here. So that really helped me to make my mind up.

Saliba is expected to return to Saint-Etienne once he has regained full fitness.
